Staking explained in simple terms: you lock cryptocurrency on a proof-of-stake (PoS) blockchain so validators can help confirm transactions and secure the network. In return, the protocol pays staking rewards, usually in the same asset you staked. It sounds passive. It is not risk-free.

Platforms such as Coinbase and Kraken offer staking-as-a-service. You select an eligible asset, opt in, and the platform manages validator operations. This is convenient, but you give up control. The platform may custody your assets, set unstaking timelines, charge a fee, or restrict access because of regulatory requirements. If the platform has legal, security, or solvency problems, you carry counterparty risk.

Staking is often marketed as passive income, and that description is fair but incomplete. The risks are real.
- Market risk: Rewards are usually paid in the staked token. If the token price drops sharply, your dollar return can turn negative.
