The business case is simple. Correspondent banking still works, but it is expensive, slow, and hard to track. Research from the IMF, BIS, JPMorgan, ACI Worldwide, and payment infrastructure firms points the same way: digital assets can materially reduce settlement time and may cut costs by up to 60 percent in high-cost corridors, especially remittances.

Why Traditional Cross-Border Payments Are Still Painful

A standard international payment often moves through a chain of correspondent banks. Each institution checks messages, handles compliance, applies fees, and settles obligations through separate accounts. That chain is the reason a simple supplier payment can take two or three business days, sometimes longer when weekends, holidays, or emerging market corridors are involved.

Businesses spend more than 120 billion USD a year on cross-border transaction costs, according to payments industry research. The global cross-border payments market is projected to reach 290 trillion USD by 2030. Small percentage improvements matter at that scale.

The phrase digital assets covers several instruments. They are not interchangeable. Pick the wrong one and you add compliance risk or liquidity friction.

Stablecoins

Stablecoins are fiat-referenced tokens, commonly linked to the US dollar or euro, issued on public or permissioned blockchains. They suit cross-border payments because they settle around the clock and slot into smart contracts, treasury systems, and payout platforms.

Stablecoin supply has grown from a few billion dollars to more than 300 billion USD over roughly five years, and on-chain reports estimate tens of trillions in annual transfer volume, with a meaningful share tied to cross-border payments. Treat the exact figures with care, since on-chain volume can include exchange and internal movement, but the adoption trend is hard to ignore.

A practical detail: USDC on Ethereum uses 6 decimals, not 18. Beginners building payout scripts often get this wrong and send the wrong unit amount in test transactions. Another common trap is the ERC-20 allowance flow. If your contract calls transferFrom before the payer approves the token spend, you will hit errors such as ERC20: insufficient allowance or a custom revert depending on the token implementation. In payments, small integration mistakes turn into reconciliation headaches.

CBDCs

Central bank digital currencies are digital forms of central bank money. Wholesale CBDCs target interbank settlement. Retail CBDCs target consumers and businesses. Cross-border CBDC work focuses on reducing dependence on long correspondent chains.

The BIS Innovation Hub's Project mBridge, involving China, Hong Kong, Thailand, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia, reached a minimum viable product stage by 2024. The core idea is simple but powerful: multiple central banks issue tokenized central bank money on a shared ledger, so participating banks settle cross-border payments directly with faster finality.

The IMF has estimated that CBDCs could reduce transaction costs by around 60 percent in high-cost remittance corridors. That is the kind of number policymakers notice.

Tokenized Deposits and Institutional Payment Tokens

Tokenized deposits represent claims on commercial bank money issued on distributed ledger technology. They serve institutional FX, liquidity management, and settlement among approved participants.

This approach often fits regulated financial institutions better than public stablecoins. Why? Banks tend to prefer deposit-based claims, permissioned access, and clear legal treatment. The trade-off is access. Tokenized deposit networks are usually not as open as public blockchain rails.

Bridge Assets

Some payment models use a crypto-asset as a bridge between two fiat currencies. XRP is the best-known example promoted for this purpose. The model converts fiat into the bridge asset, transfers it on-chain, then converts it back into local fiat.

This can reduce the need for pre-funded accounts, but it is not automatically cheaper. Liquidity, spreads, local exchange access, and regulatory treatment decide whether the model works in a real corridor.

How Digital Assets Reduce Settlement Time

Digital asset payments settle faster because the value transfer and the ledger update happen on shared infrastructure. There is less waiting for separate institutions to reconcile records after the fact.

For stablecoin payments, settlement can happen in minutes. On some networks it is faster, although finality assumptions differ by chain. A payment on Ethereum mainnet, chain ID 1, is not the same as a transfer on a permissioned DLT network or a high-throughput public chain. Understand confirmation policy, reorg risk, and custody controls before you call a payment final.

  • Marketplace seller payouts
  • Contractor and payroll payments across borders

Minutes instead of days changes cash forecasting. It also reduces disputes because both sides can verify payment status quickly.

How Digital Assets Lower Cross-Border Payment Costs

Lower cost comes from several sources, not just cheaper network fees.

Fewer Intermediaries

Traditional cross-border payments may pass through several correspondent banks. Each one can add fees and delay. Digital asset rails move value more directly between regulated entities, wallets, or payment providers. The US International Trade Commission has noted that digital currencies can reduce payment costs by shortening payment chains.

Better Liquidity Use

Pre-funded nostro accounts tie up capital. Stablecoins and tokenized money reduce that need, especially when a firm can move funds intraday. Some providers call this the stablecoin sandwich: convert local fiat to a stablecoin, transfer it, then convert into local fiat at the destination.

The model is useful, but do not assume it wins every time. If off-ramp liquidity is thin, or the local FX spread is wide, the savings disappear. Price the full path: on-ramp fee, blockchain fee, custody fee, FX spread, off-ramp fee, and compliance cost.

Automation

Digital assets can be programmed into payment workflows. Smart contracts can trigger settlement after invoice approval, escrow release, or delivery confirmation. Institutional systems can pre-validate payment data and cut manual repair queues.

JPMorgan has argued that blockchain-based payment networks can support near-instant transactions, automate complex workflows, and improve risk management. ACI Worldwide points to ISO 20022, real-time payment interlinking, CBDCs, and DLT as major components of cross-border modernization.

Enterprise Use Cases Already Taking Shape

Global Payroll and Contractor Payouts

Stablecoins work well where recipients need fast access to value and traditional banking coverage is weak. Gig platforms, marketplaces, and global employers can pay international workers faster, especially in corridors where bank wires are slow or costly.

Corporate Treasury

Treasury teams use digital assets to move liquidity between entities, reduce idle balances, and respond outside banking hours. This is not glamorous, but it is one of the most serious enterprise use cases. Cash in the wrong country on Friday evening is still a problem on Monday morning.

Institutional FX Settlement

Tokenized deposits and blockchain-based settlement networks help institutions reduce settlement risk in FX transactions. Shared ledgers also make audit trails clearer when they are designed with proper controls.

CBDC Corridors

CBDC pilots such as mBridge show what cross-border settlement could look like when central bank money becomes programmable and interoperable. The big question is not only technical. It is legal: who can participate, what data is shared, and how disputes get resolved.

Risks You Should Not Ignore

Digital asset payment rails improve speed, but they bring new responsibilities.

  • Regulation: Stablecoin issuers, payment firms, and custodians face licensing, reserve, AML, and consumer protection requirements.
  • Cybersecurity: Wallet compromise, private key loss, smart contract bugs, and exchange breaches can cause direct financial loss.
  • Interoperability: Payment systems must connect with banks, real-time rails, CBDCs, ISO 20022 messaging, and compliance tools.
  • Stablecoin quality: Reserve composition, redemption rights, governance, and supervision matter. A token with poor backing is not a safe payment instrument.
  • Operational controls: Enterprises need approval workflows, segregation of duties, address screening, and transaction limits.

To be blunt, sending stablecoins from a single hot wallet controlled by one employee is not a payments strategy. It is an incident waiting to happen.

The Likely Future: Hybrid Payment Rails

The future is not stablecoins replacing every bank wire. It is multi-rail routing. A payment orchestration layer will pick between bank rails, real-time payment systems, stablecoins, CBDCs, and tokenized deposits based on cost, speed, currency, compliance, and beneficiary preference.

Interviews with financial institutions point this way. Deutsche Bank has discussed the need for dynamic orchestration across fiat and digital rails, while Banking Circle has described a future where digital and fiat currencies run side by side.

That view is realistic. Regulated banks will keep mattering. So will public blockchains. The winners will be the teams that understand both.
