Huawei Launches Global AI Competition to Combat Climate Change Through Energy-Efficient 5G Solutions

In an effort to combat climate change and harness the potential of artificial intelligence (AI), Huawei has launched a global competition that aims to develop energy-efficient 5G solutions. This groundbreaking initiative was introduced as part of a series of competitions curated by United Nations organizations, including the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), at the AI for Good Global Summit.
Huawei’s competition specifically focuses on the 5G energy consumption modeling challenge. The objective is to create machine learning models that reduce the energy consumption of base stations, regardless of the manufacturer. Team registration for the competition is now open and will remain so until September 30, 2023. These solutions will then be showcased during the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, scheduled to take place in Dubai, UAE, at the end of this year.
During the ITU AI for Good Global Summit in Geneva, Switzerland, Xi Zheng, a researcher from Huawei’s Global Technical Service Department and coordinator of the challenge, highlighted the importance of raising awareness regarding the challenges in the information and communication technology (ICT) sector. She expressed her hope that researchers and experts worldwide would contribute their expertise to develop practical solutions and demonstrate the power of AI in addressing real-life issues.
